Paralegal Certificate Programs

Paralegal Certificate Program Information
Paralegal certificate programs are a relatively fast way to get the skills you need to start as a paralegal.
Remember: paralegal jobs are projected to grow 22% through 2016!
Paralegal certificate programs are typically 6-18 months long and cover the critical paralegal skills and
concepts you'll need to get started in a paralegal career. Upon program completion, you receive a paralegal
certificate -- NOT a degree. Many independent paralegal schools offer certificate programs.
There are a number of important advantages to pursuing a paralegal certificate.
Advantages of Paralegal Certificate Programs
Minimal entrance requirements. One major advantage of most paralegal certificate
programs is that they typically require only a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) to get started. No
worries about passing college entrance exams or lengthy application processes to go through. This makes
paralegal certificate programs very approachable and student-friendly.
Get the paralegal skills you need in a short period of time. Paralegal certificate programs are
relatively short, anywhere from 6-18 months depending on the program. That means you spend less time in school and
can get to work sooner.
Like a fast track for degree holders. Paralegal certificate programs may be a good option for
you if you already have a bachelors degree or associates degree in another area. Rather than pursuing another
entire degree, you can add the specialized paralegal skills you need to land a paralegal job. In fact, depending on
the specialty area you wind up in, your prior skills and industry
knowledge can be an added plus in your paralegal career!
Programs are widely available. There are a range of schools, both private and public, that
offer paralegal certificate programs. Many online certificate
programs are available as well. You'll be able to choose from a variety of schools to find the one that best suits your needs.
Important: Choose a Reputable Program!
If you do a quick Internet search looking for paralegal certificate programs, you'll find plenty of them.
However, just as you'd do when looking for a degree program, it's important to research potential programs to
understand exactly what you're getting. You want to make sure the curriculum is robust, and also make sure
(particularly in the case of online programs) you understand what school or organization is providing the
certificate at the end of the program. Be sure to read our tips on
evaluating paralegal schools.
Important: Don't Confuse a Certificate With Paralegal Certification!
One final note: it's important not to confuse earning a certificate with becoming a certified paralegal. The certificate program gives you
basic paralegal knowledge.
Paralegal certification usually involves completing a certain level of paralegal education, successfully passing
an exam, and sometimes completing a certain number of years working as a paralegal. Separate certification programs
are offered by several different paralegal associations.
